Uber does not adjust waiting time costs for the disabled and pays millions | Currently

Taxi platform Uber has not adjusted the costs charged for waiting for disabled passengers. This led to charges being brought against Uber, as it significantly increases the bill for people with disabilities. The company has now reached a settlement in the millions and says it will not let this happen again.

The taxi platform, which is also active in the Netherlands, starts charging for waiting times two minutes after arrival. The meter only stops when the car leaves for the destination. Uber has not adapted this arrangement for disabled passengers.

The bill for this trip can increase quickly for a disabled person. For example, folding a wheelchair or a walker and storing it in a taxi takes some time. The visually impaired person can also take a little longer to get to the taxi safely.

As a result of these discriminatory costs, Uber pays at least 65,000 victims twice the costs incurred. This amount can reach several million dollars. Furthermore, the taxi platform has to pay nearly $1.8 million (nearly €1.8 million) to victims who filed a complaint.

In addition to the cash amount, Uber is also promising to waive all waiting time costs for people with disabilities for the next two years.
