TESTED: The best blood pressure monitor is too big (and expensive), but fits snugly | Best test

TESTED: The best blood pressure monitor is too big (and expensive), but fits snugly | Best test

What is the best device to measure blood pressure? Which one has the best price-quality ratio? The Consumers Association provides the answer.

For people who regularly suffer from high or low blood pressure, a home blood pressure monitor is the answer. Measurements in a quiet environment are more reliable. There are blood pressure monitors for the upper arm or wrist. A measurement on the upper arm is more accurate than a measurement on the wrist.

The Consumers Association only tests upper arm blood pressure monitors. Tested for ease of use, screen, and additional functionality such as Bluetooth connectivity or irregular heartbeat detection. A total of 16 blood pressure monitors have been tested and are currently readily available in stores.

The meter from Omron came out the best in the test. The Beurer model is a best buy.

The Omron blood pressure monitor is quite large compared to other blood pressure monitors. It is also one of the most expensive meters. You can connect it to mains power, but it also runs on batteries (4 AA batteries). You will receive batteries included.

The tape you put around your upper arm is called a cuff. Omron’s cuff is pre-formed and feels sturdy. It fits comfortably on the arm.

The screen is clear and easy to read. However, it does not indicate whether your blood pressure is too high or too low. You have to infer that for yourself from the results. You can track the measurements of two people in memory. You can save a maximum of 60 measurements per person. You can also use the counter as a guest. Then the device does not save the measurements.

The disadvantage is that you cannot wash the cuff. And if you want to know the averages for a longer period, you’ll have to calculate it yourself. It only provides the average of the last few measurements in the past 10 minutes.

This device from Beurer is much cheaper to buy than the best in the test. It performs almost as well overall. However, there are quite a few differences.

Unlike the best in testing, the cuff is a little small and not pre-shaped. This makes it less comfortable than the Omron cuff. You can’t wash it either.

The Beurer device operates only on batteries (4 AA batteries) and not on mains power. The screen is also a bit small, but it’s easy to read and clear. The scale indicates whether your blood pressure is too high or too low.

You can track measurements for up to 4 people on the Beurer device. However, you can only save 30 measurements per person. You can also read the averages of the last 3 measurements.

The disadvantage is that this blood pressure monitor does not have the option to measure without saving the measurements. So you can’t use it as a guest.

In this section we write weekly about home and technology appliances that have been tested by the Consumers Association. This is a collaboration between the independent editors of this site and the Consumers Association.

Consumers Association tests thousands of products every year, in cooperation with qualified technicians in specialized laboratories at home and abroad. The products being tested are store-bought, so they are not previously tampered with by the manufacturers.

New models are tested as soon as possible after introduction. How quickly this happens varies by product. Best in Test is the product with the best test rating. This may also be an older model, as a newer model is not always better. The best buy is the product with the best quality-price ratio.

The advertised price of the product is the lowest current retail price to the best of Consumers Association’s knowledge. But prices may vary daily. If there is no recent retail price known, the target price will be stated.
