The most popular domestic travel destinations are Limburg, Gelderland, Drenthe and Zeeland. Remote destinations are less popular. Germany is the most popular holiday destination after the Netherlands, followed by France, Spain and Belgium. Nearly one in four vacationers plans to go camping at least once. About 8 in 10 Dutch people are planning a vacation this year. Not surprisingly, enthusiasm is greater among young people (92 percent) and lowest among the elderly (72 percent).

Corona also plays an important role in deciding on a travel destination this year. For this, the Dutch are taking a look at the local Corona measures, the number of infections in the intended holiday country, and the possibility of canceling or rescheduling the trip. Moreover, vacationers are always on the lookout for good deals, according to an ANWB report.

Interrailing on the rise

At 17 percent, sustainable train clearly emerges as a mode of travel. A few years ago, that percentage was only 2.5%. Flying (40 per cent) has been less popular among holidaymakers since the coronavirus pandemic. In 2019, the plane was still the most chosen mode of transportation, and now it’s the car (64 percent).
