Motorola Razr 40 Ultra vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4

On June 1, Motorola introduced the Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra. The latter is the high-end model with the best hardware and the most beautiful screens. It is called a foldable phone that you can fold into a small size. This makes it very easy to put in your pocket.

The same applies, of course, to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4. However, this smartphone has been available for quite some time and now its price has dropped as well. You buy it for about 730 euros. If you want to buy the new Razr, you’ll have to dig a little deeper into your pockets. The suggested retail price for the device is €1,199. with a difference of more than 450 euros.

Is it worth it? We take a closer look at both phones in our Motorola Razr 40 Ultra vs. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 comparison!

1. Hardware

In terms of hardware, these flip phones are very evenly matched. They both run on the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip. This was the fastest processor in 2022 and it’s still the same. However, it’s a shame Motorola didn’t opt for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip. It could have had an advantage with that.

Both the entry-level versions from Motorola and Samsung have 8GB of RAM. However, with the Razr 40 Ultra, you get 256GB of storage as standard, while the Galaxy only has 128GB for your files. If you want to upgrade to 256GB, you pay something extra.

However, the differences are very small. Both devices also have stereo speakers, a fingerprint scanner on the side, and NFC support. As a result, you can pay wirelessly with these folders

2. Layout and screens

The Motorola Razr 2022 is still slightly elliptical, but the edges of the Razr 40 Ultra are dead straight. At first glance, it’s no different from the Flip 4. In terms of design, but if you look closely, you’ll notice a few things.

For example, the screen on the outside of the Razr 40 Ultra is much larger. This measures in at 3.6 inches, while Samsung still comes in at 1.9 inches. With Motorola, you can check your notifications more easily or use this screen to take selfies with the two cameras.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a second, smaller screen

The main screen inside the Z Flip 4 has a diagonal of 6.7 inches. Motorola also wins this round, because the new Razr has a 6.9-inch screen. Either way, these are beautiful OLED screens with a high refresh rate. With Samsung it’s 120 Hz, with Motorola it’s 165 Hz. It sounds impressive, but in practice the difference is barely visible.

3. Cameras

Both smartphones have three lenses. The Z Flip 4’s selfie camera is 10MP, and the Razr 40 Ultra takes photos at 32MP.

That’s quite a difference on paper, but whether that’s also the case in practice remains to be seen in our review. Samsung’s software is better overall and that can make up for a few things.

In addition, the second screen also allows you to take selfies with the cameras outside. They hardly differ from each other. The devices have a 12MP main camera and a wide-angle lens that allows you to take wider pictures. The telephoto lens, which allows you to zoom in on the image, is missing in these smartphones.

4. Battery and charging

It would be a monotonous story, but the differences in the battery area are also small. The Z Flip 4 has a capacity of 3,700 mAh, while the Razr 40 Ultra has a capacity of 3,800 mAh. Since the screens of the latter device are larger, the battery life will not differ.

Charging takes place with Samsung with a power of 25W, with Motorola with a power of 33W. If you want to fill up on battery juice wirelessly, the Flip 4 has a thicker bezel. It happens at 15 watts. Razer gets stuck at just 5 watts.

5. Programs

Perhaps the most important part of the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 comparison is the update policy. Samsung is simply better. You get four major new Android releases and five years of security patches. Motorola is stuck with three Android upgrades and four years of patches keeping hackers out.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is almost a year old and has already used up some of its credit. You can still count on Android 14, 15, and 16. Security patches will be rolling out through summer 2027. The Razr 40 Ultra will crash on Android 15 and receive fewer updates for a year to keep the device secure.

Conclusion

Motorola Razr 40 Ultra and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 are evenly matched. They’re just as fast, have similar cameras, and will last about the same amount of time on a battery charge.

The important differences are pretty minor: Motorola has bigger screens inside and out, and Samsung is supported for much longer. What you find most important is, of course, up to you. However, there is also a significant price difference of over €450 in favor of the Galaxy Z Flip 4.
