Mayfield is located in the severely affected state of Kentucky. Governor Andy Bessier previously said at least 80 people have been killed in Hurricane Kentucky. He expected the death toll to be over a hundred. It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.
The factory’s spokesman Ferguson said Sunday that the search for the wreckage was still seen as a rescue effort, not a rescue operation. “We are still hopeful that some of the eight missing persons will be found,” he said.
Earlier, Bessier said it would be a “miracle” if anyone was found alive in the area. Many buildings in Mayfield have been completely destroyed.
US President Joe Biden has officially declared Kentucky’s situation a “major federal disaster”, a spokesman said. This paves the way for mobilizing additional resources from Washington to help the worst-affected state.
