The number of new cases of corona continues to rise. Between Saturday morning and Sunday morning, 17,531 positive tests were recorded, a number well above last week’s average. The increase was expected because the new and more contagious omikron variant of the coronavirus became dominant.

In the past seven days, the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has received 101,051 reports of positive tests. This is 18.5 percent more than in the previous seven days. On average, this comes to 14,436 positive tests per day. This average is rising for the fifth day in a row.

There have been 1,089 positive tests recorded in Amsterdam. In Rotterdam, 995 residents have been informed that they have the coronavirus. It is followed by The Hague (443), Utrecht (397) and Harlem (280).

The number of deaths was six on Sunday, and that low number may have something to do with New Year’s Day. On days off, fewer deaths are usually reported to the RIVM. More people will likely have died, but others will still be registered in the coming days.
