(ABM FN-Dow Jones) In the week ending May 14, the number of unemployment claims in the United States rose unexpectedly for the first time. This was revealed on Thursday by US Department of Labor figures.
The number of new applications for unemployment benefits has increased by 21,000 to 218,000. One week ago the number was reduced from 6,000 to 197,000.
Economists previously expected 200,000 new applications.
The four-week moving average is low, volatile, with 199,500 applications. This is 8,250 more than a week ago.
The number of extended assistance applications dropped by 1.317 million, down from 25,000 applications in the week ended May 7.
