Google Pixel 7a vs. Google Pixel 7: The four main differences

Google Pixel 7a vs. Google Pixel 7: The four main differences

Now that Google has introduced the relatively affordable Pixel 7a, you might be wondering what the differences are with its more expensive siblings. In our Google Pixel 7a vs Google Pixel 7 comparison, we put them in succession.

Read on after the announcement.

Comparison between Google Pixel 7a and Google Pixel 7

If you put the new Google Pixel 7a next to the more expensive Pixel 7, you’ll probably notice two things. First: the 7a is a bit smaller. Secondly, they also resemble each other like two drops of water. They have the same design, with a camera strip running down the back. Up front, the Pixel 7a has slightly thick bezels, but that’s about it.

The processor used is exactly the same. It is related to the Tensor G2 chip. It delivers excellent performance, though it’s not quite as fast as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the Samsung Galaxy S23, for example.

Both smartphones run on Android 13 and will be updated to Android 16. Both are getting five years of security patches. Since the Pixel 7a is six months younger, you can also expect these updates on this device for a little longer: until May 2028.

However, there are differences of course. In our Google Pixel 7a vs Google Pixel 7 comparison, we list the most important ones!

Google I / O 2023 Roundup: All announcements in a row

1. Screen and build quality

Google Pixel 7a is a small smartphone by modern standards. It has a 6.1-inch OLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. The resolution is 2400 x 1080 pixels. The Pixel 7 has a 6.3-inch OLED screen with the same specifications. So your preference is very personal. Are you going to squeeze or something bigger?

As mentioned, these smartphones are very similar. The same goes for build quality. Pixel 7a is IP67 certified. This means that the device is dust resistant and can stay underwater for up to 30 minutes at a depth of one meter. Pixel 7 has IP68 certification. You can leave it at a depth of 1.5 meters for half an hour before problems arise. So the subtle difference.

The Pixel 7 feels more premium because of the glass back. The Pixel 7a has a plastic back, and while that may look less attractive, it’s much sturdier. The back of the glass simply cracks faster and you’ll see the scratches sooner.

2. Cameras

We find two lenses on the back of both devices. The Pixel 7 has a 50MP main camera, while the 7a camera offers a 64MP resolution. So it may seem that a cheaper smartphone takes better pictures, but this is only apparent. The regular Pixel 7’s sensor is larger and lets in more light.

However, you will also shoot great shots with the Pixel 7a. The Google Camera software is very good and provides photos with great contrast. The wide-angle lenses for these phones, with which the panels are made wider, hardly differ from each other at all.

Do you want to be able to zoom in with your telephoto camera? or close up Making flowers and insects? This is not possible with the Pixel 7 and 7a. You then have to rely on the larger and more expensive Pixel 7 Pro.

3. Battery and charging

Despite its smaller size, the Pixel 7a has a larger battery capacity than the Pixel 7: 4,385 to 4,355 mAh. This difference is minimal, but due to the smaller screen, the 7a will likely last a little longer on a single battery charge.

It charges 18W less quickly, but this difference is almost imperceptible. The Pixel 7 gets 20 watts. You can also charge this device wirelessly at this speed. This is possible with the Pixel 7a at just 7.5W. So you need a lot of patience if you want to fill up battery juice with wireless charger.

4. Price

Pixel 7a has a suggested retail price of 509 euros. The Pixel 7 had to cost €649 last year, but now it’s much cheaper. You are currently paying around 579 euros for the device. Either way, you get 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

The difference is currently about seven decades. Whether you find the Pixel 7 worth that modest extra price depends on your preferences. Prefer a slightly larger screen? And the best camera? Then the Pixel 7 is the best choice. Moreover, these smartphones are close to each other.
