LG OLED evo G3 review – the brightest OLED TV yet

In summary

LG’s OLED evo G3 has the highest peak brightness of any OLED we’ve tested in our lab to date. When displaying a small white space, the TV is about 1500cd / square meter, which means a huge step forward. The full screen brightness is well below 200 cd/m2, but it’s also very good for an OLED screen. Therefore the HDR reproduction on this TV is beautiful. The TV is also great for gaming, with four HDMI 2.1 ports that support 120Hz display, VRR, and low input lag. Like its predecessors, the LG G3 comes with a wall mount that allows you to hang the screen flat on a wall, but you can’t get a foot in there. The G3 is LG’s top model and that is reflected in the price. The TV has just entered the market and is currently not offered below the suggested retail price. Wait seems to be the motto. If you really have the budget for it, the G3 is one of the best TVs you can buy.

Tweakers says: Ultimate

The brightness of OLED TVs has increased in small steps in recent years, but this year LG promises to take a big leap with its new OLED evo G3. Not because of a breakthrough in the OLED technology itself, but because there is a layer in front of the panel. The latest OLED displays from LG Display contain Precision lens group Front plate, made up of billions of tiny lenses. This ensures that less light is lost to scattering in the outer layers of the screen. Results? Much more light output than before with the same power consumption. In this review, we find out if this new MLA technology really only has advantages, or if there is a problem.

LG OLED evo G3, as it’s officially called, is LG Electronics’ new top model for 2023. Just like previous years, this G-series model mounts seamlessly to the wall using the included mounting bracket. The TV is just under 2.5cm thick and because the included bracket disappears into a recess in the back of the TV, the G3 hangs on the wall like a canvas. You can also leave it aside, but then you’ll have to buy a separate foot for around 150 euros, just like with previous G models.

The G3 is available in 55″, 65″, 77″ and 83″ with starting prices on our Pricewatch ranging at the time of writing from €2,599 for the 55-inch variant to €7,299 for the largest model. Version 83 does not have an MLA panel, because panel manufacturer LG Display does not (yet) produce MLA panels of this size.

However, the G3 offers more than just an OLED panel with MLA. The TV features a new version of LG’s webOS smart TV system, improved system menus, a new wizard for tuning the picture to your personal taste, and a more powerful version of LG’s Alpha 9 processor, which includes better dynamic color mapping.
