The Academy’s board met Friday to determine the consequences of Smith’s strike on Chris Rock nearly two weeks ago. In fact, the board was only supposed to talk about the consequences of the strike on April 18, but it brought forward the meeting because Smith himself revoked all of his membership.
“The 94th Academy Awards were to be a celebration of the many people in our community who have done an incredible job over the past year,” the board of directors said in a statement. “But those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior of Mr. Smith on the podium.”
The academy also says the situation was not properly addressed during the March 27 incident. “Sorry. This was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, viewers and the Academy family around the world, and we failed to do so.”
