What to Know About the 2026 Met Gala Theme: ‘Fashion Is Art’

Fashion’s biggest night has arrived, and the 2026 Met Gala is once again drawing global attention as celebrities, designers and stylists prepare for one of the most closely watched red carpets in the world. Held annually at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, the fundraiser supports the museum’s Costume Institute while also serving as a showcase for high fashion and artistic expression.

This year’s event is tied to the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, “Costume Art,” which explores the relationship between fashion, visual art and the human body.

According to the museum, the exhibition pairs garments with artworks from the Met’s extensive collection to highlight the connection between clothing and artistic representation. The exhibit examines how fashion functions not only as wearable design but also as an art form shaped by culture, identity and performance.

The 2026 Met Gala is co-chaired by Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Anna Wintour, continuing the event’s tradition of blending entertainment, fashion and celebrity culture.

Members of this year’s host committee include Zoë Kravitz, Sabrina Carpenter, Teyana Taylor, Doja Cat, Gwendoline Christie, Lena Dunham, Misty Copeland, Elizabeth Debicki, Alex Consani, Paloma Elsesser, LISA, Chloe Malle, Sam Smith, Lauren Wasser, Anna Weyant, A’ja Wilson and Yseult.

The 2026 Met Gala Dress Code: ‘Fashion Is Art’

This year’s official dress code, “Fashion Is Art,” is expected to inspire dramatic interpretations that blur the line between couture and museum-worthy artwork.

New York-based celebrity stylist Julie Matos said attendees will likely embrace looks that treat the body as a canvas, with designs influenced by famous paintings, sculptures and other visual art traditions.

“The theme is so important,” Matos said. “I don’t think enough people see fashion as art, so it’s nice to bring that concept to the forefront, especially as the Met Gala has become more mainstream.”

Her previous clients have included Gwyneth Paltrow, Demi Moore, Serena Williams and Carrie Underwood.

Avant-Garde Fashion and Sculptural Designs Expected

Fashion experts anticipate bold, theatrical looks inspired by museum installations and fine art pieces. Matos pointed to the 2015 “Wearable Art” runway presentation by Dutch designers Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren as a likely source of inspiration for this year’s attendees.

That collection featured garments resembling framed paintings and sculptural installations, pushing the boundaries of traditional fashion design.

Matos expects similar experimental creations at this year’s gala, including “sculptural construction pieces” and garments made from unconventional materials.

One example she referenced was the custom Balmain gown worn by singer Tyla at the 2024 Met Gala. The dress, made with sand and micro-crystal embellishments, was designed to reflect the event’s “The Sand of Time” theme.

“It was sculptural and gorgeous,” Matos said.

Which Celebrities Could Dominate the Red Carpet?

Fashion and lifestyle writer Maggie Gillette, co-founder of Chicago Fashion Week, said she expects “a lot of avant-garde and surrealist fashion” at this year’s event.

“This is definitely a time to push fashion boundaries,” she said.

Among the celebrities generating the most anticipation are Rihanna and A$AP Rocky, both known for delivering headline-making Met Gala appearances.

Matos also said she is eager to see Rosalía interpret the theme, noting that the singer’s artistic approach to music and fashion aligns naturally with this year’s concept.

Music artists have increasingly become some of the Gala’s biggest fashion risk-takers, often embracing theatrical styling and conceptual fashion more fully than traditional Hollywood stars.

Other celebrities expected to draw attention include Bad Bunny, Harry Styles, Teyana Taylor, Pharrell Williams and Lady Gaga.

A Theme Designed for Creative Risk-Taking

With “Fashion Is Art” serving as the guiding concept, the 2026 Met Gala is expected to spotlight daring couture, museum-inspired craftsmanship and highly conceptual celebrity styling. As fashion continues to intersect with entertainment, visual art and internet culture, this year’s event could become one of the Gala’s most visually ambitious themes yet.
