A plane flying from San Francisco to Japan lost a wheel during takeoff. The Boeing 777-200 then landed in Los Angeles.
The United Airlines plane was carrying 235 passengers and 14 crew members on its way to Osaka. The wheel fell in the airport’s employee parking lot, damaging the car.
The moment of tire disintegration and the damage caused by it are recorded:
Boeing loses its steering wheel shortly after takeoff
United Airlines says the people on board were not in danger. According to the airline, the plane was designed in a way that enables it to land safely in the event of missing wheels or tires, or with damaged tires. This type of aircraft has six wheels on each side under the wings.
An alternative plane was arranged for the passengers so that they could continue their journey to Osaka.
Maybe a maintenance issue
Aviation experts tell the AP that losing wheels or tires on planes is rare and does not indicate a larger safety issue. One expert says that often indicates a maintenance issue, and the problem is usually not caused by the manufacturer, in this case Boeing.
This is not the first time this year that a defect has been discovered during a flight of a Boeing aircraft. An Alaska Airlines 737-MAX lost a door panel while in flight early this year. This was due to loose screws, a defect that was later also discovered in other aircraft of the same type. Then the US Aviation Authority temporarily grounded aircraft of this type.
