Google is looking forward to showing its new smartphones to the world in October. We’ve already read a lot of rumors about the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. So it’s time for an overview. What can you expect from phones?
Read on after the announcement.
Google Pixel 8 Pro: All the rumors in a row
2022 was a happy year: when Google officially brought the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro to the Netherlands. For the first time, you can order pixels through regular channels and no longer have to rely on gray imports.
We are now about ten months old, and their successors are waiting impatiently. It may also be available in our store. Google has always been bad at keeping secrets, which is why we’ve been reading so many rumors about the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. In this overview we mention the most important ones.
Screens on the shovel
There are not many changes in the design of the phones. The screen edges may be a little thinner, but we see the same design language. The camera strip runs horizontally across the back again. However, the Pixel 8 Pro’s three cameras are now housed in a single slot. On the Pixel 7 Pro, the telephoto lens still has its own hole.
Screens are fixed themselves. It is rumored that the Pixel 8 will have a 6.16-inch OLED display. This makes the device slightly smaller than the Pixel 7 at 6.3 inches. Good news for fans of compact phones.
Those who want a larger screen are counting on the Pixel 8 Pro. Just like its predecessor, it has a 6.7 inch screen. However, we also see an important change here: curved edges are a thing of the past. Both options will have a flat screen.
faster hardware
While the Pixel 7 phones look pretty fast in practice, the Tensor G2 chip is slower than those in other high-end smartphones. Tensor G3 would probably be a lot faster. The individual “cores”, which are responsible for accomplishing various tasks, have a more modern architecture. Hopefully, the G3 can be as fast as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. It would be nice if it also used more power for a long battery life.
Alleged storage variants have already been leaked. The loafers again have 128GB on board. You can also choose 256GB and 512GB. The latter was missing from the Pixel 7 series. The storage cannot be expanded using a micro SD card.
Improved cameras
Pixels score very well in the camera field. To maintain its position, Google is working hard to develop the hardware again with the next generation. The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro get a new 50-megapixel main camera with a larger sensor that lets in 35 percent more light. As a result, your night photos in particular should look better.
Wide-angle lenses are also new. The Pixel 8’s resolution remains 12MP, but the 8 Pro version gets a 64MP resolution. It’s about the sensor behind the Pixel 7a’s main camera. Plus, this lens is slightly wider than last year’s, so you can see more on screen.
The Pixel 8 Pro also keeps the telephoto lens with which you can zoom in 5x. There is also a sensor that acts as a thermometer. For example, you can measure your body temperature by placing the device on your forehead. These features are missing from the regular Pixel 8.
Slightly bigger battery, slightly faster charging
The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro both get a slightly larger battery. Before you jump into the air, we must say that the differences are very small. With the Pixel 8 it’s around 130 mAh, with the Pro up to 24 mAh. You are unlikely to notice this in practice, unless the Tensor G3 chip is actually more economical.
Something similar applies to charging speed. You can charge the Pixel 8 at 24W, while the Pixel 7 is stuck at 20W. The Pixel 8 Pro goes from 23 to 27 watts. It’s time to take a bigger leap, because you won’t notice much here either.
It’s also possible to refuel the battery wirelessly, but the speeds don’t change: 20W on the Pixel 8 and 23W on the Pixel 8 Pro.
Smaller rumors
- Google Pixel 8 will be available in four colors: black, green, light blue, and pink. With the Pixel 8 Pro, you can choose from black, green, blue, and white/beige.
- New Pixel devices may get desktop mode, allowing you to use it like a mini computer for simple tasks like word processing.
- Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro can filter out background noise from videos. So it’s no longer a problem if someone yells through your masterpiece.
the highest price
The Pixel 7 (€649) and Pixel 7 Pro (€899) have a relatively low RRP for high-end smartphones. Unfortunately, rumors suggest that the Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro will become more expensive. Exact prices are not yet known, but we can guess. We believe the Pixel 8 will cost €749 in the Netherlands, while the Pixel 8 Pro will cost €999. We will know for sure in a month or two.
