More than 4,000 paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries have caught fire in a blaze at a prominent museum in Georgia’s breakaway province of Abkhazia.
According to emergency services, the fire broke out after an electrical cable in the ceiling burned.
Among the missing paintings are hundreds of works by Alexander Shashba-Shervasgids. He is an important Russian-Georgian painter who collaborated with Pablo Picasso among others.
The museum is located in the capital, Sukhumi. I lost almost the entire group. The Minister of Culture of Abkhazia speaks about the “irreparable loss of national culture.”

Abkhazia is part of Georgia under international law, but considers itself an independent state. Russia supports Abkhazia in this regard. The last war over the region broke out in 2008, also involving the other self-declared republic of South Ossetia.
