Dillon Gabriel leaves the game after being fouled late in the second quarter
Oklahoma QB Dillon Gabriel leaves the game with an apparent injury after being tackled in the red zone.
Gabriel was 13-for-21 for 191 yards and two touchdowns in the first half as the Sooners and Cougars tied 17-17 at halftime in Provo, Utah. Oklahoma radio said Gabriel suffered a head injury.
Arnold, the No. 3 player in the 2023 ESPN 300 rankings, was expected to occupy the red spot this season, but with four previous appearances, he won’t be able to hold it down.
“You always try to be mindful of that,” Oklahoma coach Brent Venables said of Arnold’s potential redshirt in his press conference Tuesday. “Sometimes you can do it and sometimes that was the plan but there’s a disaster that happens and then you have to make a hard right turn. You’re always looking at Plan A or Plan B, best case scenario, worst case scenario. But he’s still able to do all the iterations in In case something unexpected happens so he can stay prepared.
Gabriel, who transferred from UCF to Oklahoma last season, suffered a head injury against TCU last season and missed the start against Texas. This season, he has thrown for 3,260 yards and 27 touchdowns to five interceptions, including leading the Sooners 75 yards in 62 seconds for a 34-30 win.
