Protests after the visit of an Israeli minister to Al-Aqsa Mosque
Radical Minister Itamar Ben Jvir (Security) International criticism When he visited the courtyard of Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, shortly after taking office. Only Muslims are allowed to pray in that area, but Ben Gvir wants to change that.
Ben Gvir’s move sparked strong protests from the Palestinians. Jordan next door also reacted angrily. Ben Gvir’s action would be against international law. According to Jordan, the minister threatens the balance between Israelis and Palestinians in Jerusalem.
In Israel, too, there is criticism of the minister’s approach. The main Israeli rabbis are not in favor of changing the rules in the Al-Aqsa area. The Israeli Prime Minister had said in response that he wanted to strictly implement the status quo around Al-Aqsa Mosque.
The Netherlands has maintained good relations with both Israel and the Palestinians for years. The government supports the two-state solution, but peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians have been stalled for many years.
