Ron DeSantis is running for President of the United States on behalf of the Republican Party. He officially registered with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on Wednesday.
DeSantis is the Governor of the US state of Florida. It was announced on Tuesday that he will announce his candidacy today. Wednesday through Thursday night, he explains in an interview with Elon Musk, which was revealed then. The interview will take place on Twitter.
During last year’s midterms, DeSantis made solid gains in his state. The governor presented himself as a successful replacement for former President Donald Trump. He is younger and surrounded by less drama and controversy. For many voters, his victory in the midterms made him the best candidate to defeat incumbent President Joe Biden.
But in recent months, DeSantis’ reputation has taken a hit because of his conflict with Disney. He was unhappy about the war in Ukraine, calling it a “territorial dispute” (which he later retracted). At the same time, Trump’s popularity has rebounded, partly because of the lawsuits against him. Many voters rallied back to the former president.
The battle he has to fight against the other Republican candidates so far will focus mainly on Trump. Other candidates, according to polls, are less likely than DeSantis and the former president.
