Mexican onions in the United States are contaminated with Salmonella

The CDC recalls raw onions imported from Mexico in 37 states due to Salmonella pollution.

Recall that red, yellow and white onions were shipped from Chihuahua, Mexico to Mexico between July 1, 2021 and August 31, 2021. Mainly onions were supplied by wholesalers to restaurants and supermarkets.

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) has received more than 650 reports of Salmonella related to onion consumption in recent weeks. These bacterial infections have already led to nearly 130 additions in hospitals, 13 of which are recent additions.

Contaminated irrigation water

CDC advises consumers to reject raw onions sourced from Mexico. The health service warns against buying and of course consuming onions that look vague. Previous salmonella infections of onions in the United States have been linked to the use of contaminated irrigation water. The source of the Mexican pollution is not yet known.

The bacterium Salmonella causes high fever in humans and often causes diarrhea with frequent diarrhea. Symptoms begin six to six days after eating contaminated food and last up to a week. Children under the age of five, adults over the age of 65 and those with a weakened immune system can become seriously ill and may be hospitalized as a result.
