An investigative jury will examine Donald Trump’s role in the storming of the Capitol in January 2021. The former US president himself expects to be arrested.
Trump reported on social media that he had received a message from Special Counsel Jack Smith. In the letter, Smith wrote that the former president is under criminal investigation.
Trump says he has four days to report to the jury. He writes: “It always means an arrest.” A spokesman for Smith declined to comment.
On January 6, 2021, Trump supporters stormed the Capitol. At that time, the US Congress was there to record the results of the presidential election. Trump would have urged his supporters to block it. The Republican continues to claim without evidence that Democrat Joe Biden won by fraud in the vote.
A special commission ruled late last year that Trump was the “principal instigator” of the storming of the Capitol. The committee recommended that the Justice Department file criminal charges against Trump.
Trump received a letter from Smith earlier this year. Then he was arrested for taking and withholding confidential documents. He also had to appear in front of a jury for his role in hush money payments to pornographic actress Stormy Daniels.
