Useful Android Tips for WhatsApp

Welcome to the second version of Android Tips. In this weekly section, we provide useful tips and tricks to get the most out of your Android phone.

last week We stopped at Google MapsBut this week we are focusing on WhatsApp. You probably use this app on a daily basis, but did you know these tricks?

1. Hide your personal data (from certain people)

The standard version of WhatsApp is not privacy friendly. By default, chat partners see your WhatsApp status, information, and when you last used the app. The good news is that you can protect this data. The extra cool thing is that you can arrange this for everyone:

2. Stay informed about important messages

Some people use WhatsApp for both commercial and private purposes. Sometimes you want to stay informed about a business conversation, for example because you still have to call the conversation partner or send an email.

In this case, you can pin the conversation to the top of WhatsApp. Every time you open the app, you see the conversation. This is how it works:

  1. Open WhatsApp and long press on the contact you want to pin;
  2. Tap the bulletin board pin icon at the top of the screen;
  3. Chat is now installed.

Do you no longer have to continue the conversation? Then long press on the chat again and tap on the line bulletin board pin icon.

Another useful way to keep track of important messages is to not read them. This way, it looks like you haven’t seen the content before and a dot will appear next to the chat. Doing so deceives yourself that you haven’t read the message yet (and may take some action).

You make the WhatsApp chat unread by long pressing on the chat. Then tap on the three dots at the top right of the screen. Choose Mark as unread.

3. “I have a new song”

When you have a new number, you want to tell everyone as soon as possible. WhatsApp has the perfect solution for that: mailing lists. With such a group message, you can send one message to several contacts at the same time.

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap on the three dots at the top right of the screen;
  2. Press “New mailing list” and select the contacts who should receive the mass message;
  3. Press the green check mark and compose your message;
  4. Once you press send, all contacts will receive the message.

Speaking of which, recipients don’t know they’re part of a mailing list. So they receive the application as a “normal” message. If you haven’t chatted with each other yet, the app chat will be started.

4. Make pictures and messages disappear

Do you want to send a funny, intimate or crazy picture to someone? Send a one-time photo via WhatsApp. As the name implies, this image can only be seen once, after which it is deleted:

  1. Go to the WhatsApp chat with the person who wants to send you a photo (or video) for one time;
  2. Press the paperclip (“Attach”) and select “Camera” or “Gallery”;
  3. Select (or take) the photo or video you want to send;
  4. Tap the circle with the number 1 at the bottom right;
  5. Embellish the snapshot with some text and hit the send button to send.

You can also make messages disappear automatically. For this you have to enable the so-called expiration date. Once you do that, the messages will expire after 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days. When the time has elapsed, the message content will automatically disappear from your conversations:

  1. Go to the WhatsApp chat for which you want to enable the function;
  2. Click on the name of the contact and select “Messages with expiration date”;
  3. Specify whether messages will disappear automatically after 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days;
  4. are you ready!

5. Writing without tapping

WhatsApp and Google Assistant are two excellent teams. This is nice, because you don’t necessarily have to type to send a message. Also (video) calling is not a problem – provided you pass the right command. These voice commands will work anyway:

  • “Okay Google, send a WhatsApp message to [naam]. “
  • “Okay Google, send an app to [naam]. “
  • “Ok Google, call [naam] via WhatsApp.
  • “Okay Google, video call [naam] via WhatsApp.
