Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced on Tuesday that Denmark had reached a defense agreement with the United States. The agreement allows US soldiers to be stationed on Danish soil.
The contract is valid for ten years. That means there will be a permanent US military presence in Denmark for years to come.
Denmark and the US will sign the agreement later this week. Denmark is expected to adopt the necessary legislation within a year. After that, the first American soldiers could arrive in the Scandinavian country. It is not known how many players were involved.
Greenland and the Faroe Islands, which are part of the Kingdom of Denmark, are not under treaty with the United States. Defense Minister Trolls Lund Paulsen made the announcement at a joint press conference with Frederiksen.
Earlier this month, Finland and Sweden signed similar agreements with the United States. Finland signed a defense deal on Monday to give the US military access to its long border with Russia.
Norway, which shares a narrow border with Russia, has already signed an agreement to station US troops on Norwegian territory in 2021.
