A belated warning sent some of the top racing cars out of the way and out of a winning chance when others, including some who struggled, stayed outside and found themselves ahead in a four-lap shootout.

Busch had lost the lead to Elliott in the previous restart when Busch had the lane option. After Elliott passed, Bush couldn’t come close to the challenge. Teams often do the opposite of a leader. Busch was the first car to come off a pit road after changing only the right side tires. When he was told it was the only car that changed two tires, he made his comment on the radio about how difficult it was. He was right. Busch restarted in 12th place and finished 21st.

Among those who did not take out the pit path was Kurt Busch. He finished sixth on caution and resumed play in second place after Elliott. But Elliott got Kurt Busch quickly and wasn’t challenged.

“I’ve been kind to him,” Kurt Busch said of Elliot. “I should have thrown some fenders and moved some momentum. I didn’t commit to our strength.”

However, he took second place.

Ryan Blaney was ninth when he waved caution and moved into third for the restart by staying out. This is where he finished, completing a chaotic night that saw him run forward early, struggle to maneuver, spin in Lap 205 and then end up in fifth.

“I was surprised by so many people,” Blaney said. “The tires didn’t mean much tonight, especially for the first handful of laps, they didn’t really mean much. Our plan was to stay put. …Then I saw several cars in a pit. I was very shocked.”

“To stand in the second row, I have a small chance to try and achieve something at the end of the race. It ended up being a good opportunity.”

Kyle Larson It was the fourth when the warning was waved and it didn’t flare up. He took fourth place.

Chastain used his new four tires to go from 11th to 5th, the highest finishing car that hit the pit before the last restart.

Once we got to Turn 1, we had a grip,” Chastain said. “I have to (Cole Custer) and push it as long as possible. I wanted to try tandem and help him and help me.

“I went out and it was clean air, and then kind of stabbed my way in with a knife even though he was in there and fended off some guys on the last lap to hold on to fifth. It’s kind of where the sailors broke up at Turn 1 and 2 on new tyres.”
