Each adult must receive a fixed amount of several hundred euros each month. This amount should replace various allowances, such as rent and health care, that low-income people now receive. D66 calls for this in its election manifesto.
According to D66 leader Rob Gitten, our current tax and bonus system is too complex. Instead, each adult receives a fixed amount that is offset against taxes. Anyone who pays no tax or pays very little, the amount will be transferred to their bank account. The base amount also goes to people who are not currently receiving benefits. “But this is the simplest system,” says Gitten. “We are raising taxes on high incomes in our plans so we can pay for them.”
If D66 succeeds in achieving its goal, all types of deductions in the tax system will also be eliminated in the future, including the mortgage interest deduction. Instead, the basic amount, as the party calls it, should be increased for everyone. “This way we make the system simpler, stop the complicated infusion of money and prevent people from having to repay the money afterwards,” says Jetten.
Higher taxes
The party wants to increase benefits. To encourage people to work more days, there should be a tax break for those who work more than three days a week. To pay for all these plans, D66 wants to dramatically increase the wealth tax and income tax for people who earn above average. The party also wants to make more profits from companies.
The party also writes in its election manifesto that it wants to achieve the Paris climate targets more quickly: not in 2050 but as early as 2040. In seven years, by 2030, 60% of these targets must be achieved. To achieve this, all homes will have to turn off gas more quickly than currently planned. The industry must also become more sustainable, more quickly. Earlier, the Dutch Environmental Assessment Agency, among others, announced that meeting the current deadlines would require a massive additional effort.
However, D66 believes it is possible, with factories and households emitting carbon dioxide2 To pay more for emissions. To compensate citizens for this, each adult will receive a “climate bonus” of 250 euros per year if it reaches $66.
