In a number of London neighborhoods where the Conservatives long ago held the majority, they lost it. With this, Britons are likely to show their anger at the steep rise in the cost of living and the fines imposed on Johnson and his cronies for violating their Corona rules around partying during lockdowns, known as the ‘party gate’.

‘warning shot’

“This is a warning shot from Conservative voters,” said Daniel Thomas, Conservative leader of Barnet Council. And ruling party leader Oliver Dowden speaks of “difficult results”. “Of course I accept that these are difficult times and that there have been some difficult outcomes. However, I do not accept that the Labor Party has the impetus to form the next government.”

Final results are expected later on Friday and are an important snapshot for public opinion since Johnson secured the largest majority in 30 years for the Conservative Party in the 2019 general election. Preliminary results show Johnson’s party lost 92 seats in the House. The main opposition Labor Party won 23 seats, while the Liberal Democrats won 42 seats.
