Blizzard requires SMS verification with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II – Gaming – News

Here we are again with gdpr…what does this have to do with gdpr…if I sell something and ask you to buy your phone number, I can. I just am not allowed to use this for other purposes than I mentioned earlier. If I want my service to work with SMS verification, you have to choose whether you want to use this service or not. Nobody is forcing you to use my service. So you have a choice: No or give me your mobile number and then you can use your service. On the other hand, as a service provider, I may only use your phone number for what I said I would use. So if this is for verification, I can only use this for verification. I may not, for example, send you a “Welcome new game”. And do you really think the snowstorm will lose sleep over the Netherlands? or from Belgium. I can’t play Diablo Immortal here in Belziek. Is it sure enough? And again, this has nothing to do with gdpr at all. There is nothing in the GDPR that says I can’t ask you for your phone number! It only describes how personal data is handled and what you can and cannot do with it.

And to be honest…is it so bad that Blizzard has your cell phone number? I think there are worse things in the world than this. Many people are always complaining about this and that gdpr but they will fill up your cheerful face book and instagram, use google search, use android, and download the whole list here. If you want to play, you give your mobile number, if you don’t want to give a number, then play something else. Simply. If you intend to buy a kitchen or a car, you must also provide your phone number, otherwise you will not buy anything. So what’s the difference? Here they clearly say what will be done with it. I don’t know about this car salesman, nor about the kitchen builder. But you have to give up.

Whether this additional verification is really helpful is a good question. It may be part of the solution, but it will never be 100%. It takes some extra time/money to create another account. So it will definitely help. I have nothing against it, I don’t cheat or I wouldn’t be lame. What really bothers me is that I can’t play Diablo Immortal due to all kinds of obscure legislation. But my 7-year-old daughter might buy a LOL surprise, but I can’t buy the loot box in the game. Understand who can understand. And no, to the surprise of LOL, you don’t 100% know what to buy. But this verification partially solves a problem with Blizzard. So why all the hate for giving out a stupid cell phone number? Blizzard knows very well not to use this for any other purpose or else they will be suspended. They really can’t be that stupid.
