North Korea has warned that it will not hesitate to shoot down a US military aircraft if it trespasses into North Korea’s airspace. Pyongyang is making the announcement in response to what it claims are recent maneuvers by the US.
US spy planes have reportedly entered all of North Korea’s airspace recently, North Korea’s Defense Ministry said in a statement carried by state news agency KCNA. Pyongyang calls the act a provocative spying operation.
“It cannot be ruled out that the tragic incident of a US Air Force strategic reconnaissance plane being shot down in the Baltic Sea could happen,” a North Korean military spokesman said. “If something serious like this actually happens, it’s entirely America’s fault.”
South Korea’s military denies any violation of its neighbor’s airspace and says the U.S. regularly conducts surveillance flights around the Korean Peninsula.
Pyongyang also condemns a US nuclear submarine that recently entered the waters around the peninsula. The submarine arrived at South Korea’s Busan port last month. North Korea says it is approaching nuclear conflict. Allies South Korea and the United States conduct regular joint military exercises.
The US and North Korea are pitted against each other in the war in Ukraine. Washington has said North Korea supplies Russia with weapons and fears Pyongyang will increase arms exports in exchange for food aid to the impoverished country.
