The school year and the new academic year have begun. This means you will meet a lot of new people and maybe make friends too. But how important is it to have friends?
Heel belangrijk, denkt Anne-Laura van Harmelen, hoogleraar Brein, Veiligheid en Veerkracht aan de Universiteit Leiden. “We weten dat vriendschap alleen al helpt door de positieve interactie die het met zich meebrengt. En vrienden kunnen steun bieden, mocht je dat nodig hebben.”
Daarnaast kun je bij je vrienden afkijken hoe zij omgaan met bepaalde situaties. Je kunt dus van ze leren. En volgens Van Harmelen is ook aangetoond dat vriendschappen een stressverlagend effect hebben.
Volgens Jan Willem van de Maat kan een vriendschap op verschillende manieren steun bieden. Van de Maat houdt zich bij Movisie, het landelijk kennisinstituut voor een samenhangende aanpak van sociale vraagstukken, bezig met sociale netwerken en eenzaamheid.
“Emotionele steun is de belangrijkste vorm”, zegt hij. “Het is van belang dat je je verhaal bij iemand kwijt kan. Dat je je gezien en gehoord voelt. We weten dat als je die steun mist, je stressniveau omhooggaat, je minder goed slaapt en last kunt krijgen van allerlei andere nadelige gezondheidseffecten.”

“For example, losing social support may be just as harmful as smoking a pack of cigarettes and becoming significantly overweight.” There is also such a thing as practical support. Consider help with transportation or getting groceries to be brought to you if you are sick.
Moreover, a friend can also express his appreciation to you. Not only do you need this for your self-esteem, but it is also good for your self-confidence. Moreover, belonging to something can provide a pleasant and secure feeling, as Van de Maat knows. “This is a human need.”
Without friends you can feel lonely
In addition, a group of friends can also provide you with information. “For example, they can tell you where you can find reliable medical information online or remind you that you need to renew your passport.”
Van Harmelen believes that without friendship you can feel lonely. “Loneliness is an important indicator of mental health problems,” says the professor. “Especially in late adolescence, friends are more important to your mental health than your family.”
A person who has no friends and is experiencing depressive thoughts has more difficulty recalling positive memories than a person with depressive symptoms who is with friends.
It doesn’t matter how many people you consider your friends, van Harmelen knows. “It’s not about the number, it’s about the quality of your friendships. Few people have thirty good friends. Most have one or two.”
