WhatsApp brings chat migration from iOS to Android to Pixels and new phones

Telegram is still superior in this

Nonsense. Telegram is a completely different kind of app. Some kind of Slack for example. Telegram is similar to whatsapp, but it cannot be compared at all.

Whatsapp works in such a cumbersome way because the history of conversations, photos, files, etc. are stored on your device and that of your chat partner only Not on the server. This means that Whatsapp cannot read with your chats. Conversations in Whatsapp by default are well encrypted from end to end. So Whatsapp can never store information on their server about the content of the conversations. Not even attachments (files/photos). As iOS and Android make it more difficult to access data due to security, especially iOS is tough, it is difficult to migrate data that is only in the encrypted and secure part of the app storage. This means that if someone gets their hands on your phone number, they will never be able to access your Whatsapp call data. History of conversations, photos, etc. is safe.

Telegram chats are not end-to-end encrypted. Only your connection to the Telegram server is encrypted. This means that you can actually retrieve your data from the telegram server from all the sites. But it also means that all of your data (including attachments) is on Telegram’s servers. I find that a bit risky, so the convenience of Telegram comes at a price as well. If someone gets into your Telegram account, they will also be able to access your chat history, etc. It may not be useful. There is no end-to-end encryption with Telegram. The server decrypts/encrypts. Thus Telegram itself holds the encryption keys and can monitor your conversations if they wish. You can optionally turn on end-to-end encryption for a conversation, but tada, these conversations are just as limited as WhatsApp. According to the Privacy Policy, Telegram also stores metadata of your chats for 12 months. In addition to your IP addresses, etc. So it’s not particularly favorable in that regard either.

So, have fun using Telegram. Put all your data on a “Russian” server without any transparency. Only with some vague promises from the owner. The fact that they are now operating from Dubai does not make things better, in terms of legislation etc.

But the constant whining about Telegram doing anything better is nonsense in and of itself. Telegram does nothing better, it does something Different. You sacrifice necessary privacy and security for a few extra functionality. This is a choice.

Do you want to compare Whatsapp correctly? Then take Signal. Practically does the same thing. Just for fun, see if you can transfer your data from Signal iOS to Signal Android on Signal.
