The case caused a great deal of controversy in the United States following its publication on social media. All three were convicted last November. The judge was silent for a minute to draw attention to the terror the victim must have endured when he was chased and noted that there was no remorse for the “terrifying” act.

In court, Ahmed’s sister recalled him as a positive thinker with a great personality. She told the judge, “Her brother had dark, glowing dark skin, with curly hair and an athletic physique. Factors that made him a target for the men who followed him.”

She continued: “It was these traits that led these men to suspect that Ahmed was a dangerous criminal and why they pursued him at gunpoint.

Ahmed’s mother also spoke. “It simply came to our notice then. They deliberately targeted my son because they did not like him in their community. They chose to treat him differently from others who were constantly going to their community. When they did not frighten him, they killed him. “

Father, son and next door neighbor

The perpetrators were gunman Travis McMichael, his father and a neighbor. They said they thought Arbery was a thief, but there was no evidence. The victim’s father spoke of a murder. According to the verdict, after thirty years of imprisonment, only the neighbor is allowed to apologize, which is not possible for the other two. The next of kin asked for a life sentence.

The convicted neighbor filmed the chase and shooting. When these pictures spread on the internet, all three were under suspicion. McMichael and his father were arrested shortly after the incident, but were released after their report was released. In May 2020, all three were still arrested.

Protests

Arbery’s death, 25, sparked protests in Brunswick. His name was frequently mentioned in protests after the death of George Floyd. Floyd, a black American, was killed by a white police officer in May 2020 when he was arrested. U.S. President Joe Biden said Arbery’s assassination was “a painful reminder” that much more needs to be done in the fight against racial inequality in the United States.
