Protagonist Penn Badgley reveals the hidden clue to the Season 4 finale.
Although Rhys Montrose (Ed Speleers) did exist and Joe killed him, he wasn’t the culprit. Rhys was a projection of Joe’s (Penn Badgley) imagination. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Badgley referred to the hidden clue in an earlier season.
hidden side
Badgley is more than pleased with the development in the story. “This season I saw Joe through other people’s eyes for the first time. It seemed like a mirage, a perfected version of the same character. Reese the killer is a metaphor in this context, the hidden side of Joe,” says the actor.
first clue
Badgley also talks about the first time Joe broke up, so to speak. Badgley: “It started in the third episode of season 3. In it I played two Joes, and that was probably the beginning of the story we saw in this season.”.
The protagonist refers to Joe’s fever dream. You can watch the scene below. Joe has to do some killing feats, but it turns out he has measles. In the next hallucination, he is talking to himself.
Any hope for a better future for Joe seems to have vanished. Joe’s rejection of his dark side turns out to be an illusion.
