This Philips Hue update scares off thieves

Nieuwe update van Philips Hue jaagt inbrekers sneller weg

A new update to the Philips Hue app adds a useful feature to the smart home brand’s smart security cameras.

A new update to the Philips Hue app has hit the Apple App Store and Google Play Store today. The update includes some important new features for Hue Secure security camera users. It’s now easier to trigger your alarm system in the app. In the Hue app home page overview, there’s a small icon on the right side of the Secure box.

Detect people, animals and packages

Hue Secure cameras can now also automatically trigger an alarm when they detect certain motion. With the help of artificial intelligence, the Hue camera recognizes whether it’s a person, animal, vehicle, or package. This way, the system can more quickly chase down thieves and other scum.

The AI should also prevent the alarm from going off at a loud 80 decibels when the neighbor’s cat passes by or when the delivery person delivers something.

Subscription required

This sounds good, of course, but there’s a catch. People, animals, vehicles, and package detection only works if you have a Hue Secure Plan subscription. These subscriptions start at €40 per year per camera.

A new option will be added in the next app update, which is to turn the alarm system on and off based on a specific schedule.
