Televisions in 2022: woled, QD-are, OLED EX, miniled, gamefu

With the CES trade show behind us, we can now pretty much define the TV trends for 2022. What’s really new and what else has surprised us about the many announcements made by TV manufacturers? In this article, we’ll cover the major trends of the year.

QD- you

The biggest news is without a doubt the arrival of the first QD OLED TVs. This new OLED technology uses blue OLED sub-pixels partially supplied with green and red quantum dot filters, which convert blue light into green and red light. Possible advantages over OLED (or woled-) The technology used in TVs is higher efficiency, higher brightness, (slightly) better viewing angles and more color volume. Better color saturation is possible at higher brightness than with wool screens. They mix pure white light and therefore automatically lose color saturation at high brightness.

I’ve been going there for a while Rumors That Samsung Display has QD OLED display technology ready for production and has introduced two 55-inch and 65-inch panels to various TV manufacturers during 2021. The expectation, of course, was that sister company Samsung Electronics would be the first to announce TVs based on this new screen technology, But this turns out not to be the case; Samsung has yet to announce QD OLED TVs. However, CES presented an unspecified Samsung QD OLED TV Awarded for Innovation. For this, manufacturers have to submit their products for consideration and nothing is tested. It’s unclear why Samsung hasn’t announced anything yet. However, given the rumor mill of the past few months and TV submission for the award, it seems that Samsung decided belatedly to postpone the submission.

This paved the way for Sony, which owns A95K is a QD OLED TV announced. When asked, Sony doesn’t want to mention which manufacturer you buy these panels from, but knowing that the A95K will only be released in 55″ and 65″, which are the screen sizes that Samsung Display offers, and that no other panel manufacturers are known to offer QD OLED screens. production, we can safely assume that the screens come from Samsung Display.

QD- You’re white tight

The way the Sony places the A95K in relation to other TVs is interesting, because Sony also makes woled TVs with LG display panels. As in previous years, Sony will once again supply woled TVs and LCDs in 2022, with woled models, as before, that have more features, higher type numbers, and higher prices than LCD models. New QD-oled TVs are now placed on top of existing woled models, with the lineup consisting of QD-oled, woled and then led-LCD from high to low.

Remarkably, Sony does not distinguish between the two consumer OLED variants; In both cases he is only talking about “OLED TV”. Sony claims that the new A95K, thanks to QD OLED technology, offers greater color volume, more accurate color reproduction and better viewing angles than conventional OLED screens, which will be used in the A90K and A80K series this year. Thus, the A95K with QD-oled was given the designation XR Triluminos Max, while the screens made of wool were given the designation XR Triluminos Pro. We’re curious to see if consumers will understand this, but we’re not afraid.

QD OLED: When?

Thus, the new A95K will be the top model of the Sony range, but when we can actually buy the TV and what the price will be, Sony does not yet want to say. Sony has also not shown TV to journalists yet, so the announcement at the moment is a Paper release It seems that. The reason for this seems to be explainable. During CES, Samsung Display showed off prototypes of QD OLED TVs behind closed doors to the press, saying it would release the panels “in the first half of the year”. This sounds vague, but it indicates that we should not expect the first consumer products before the onset of summer. It’s speculation, but it seems that the mass production of QD OLED panels, which Samsung Display celebrated at an official ceremony at the end of November, will not go as hoped.

It is not clear if this applies only to the larger 55-inch and 65-inch panels for TVs or also to the 34-inch panel for monitors. Announcing his screen I know it will be on the market in April. Samsung Electronics, in addition to the QD OLED TV, also has a 34-inch G8QNB-QD OLED screen CES award receivedShe eventually chose not to advertise that screen during the show.

OLED-EX, LG’s answer

In recent months, LG has undoubtedly noticed the rumors surrounding QD-oled in the main competitor with above-average interest and LG Display was announced just before CES with improved OLED EX . panel to come. EX stands for “evolution and experience”. The EX panels can be seen as an improved version of last year’s OLED evo panels, which offered up to 20 percent higher peak brightness than the OLED panels available until then.

For the new EX panels, LG now claims brightness is 30 percent higher than “traditional OLED displays,” which probably isn’t referring to last year’s evo panels, but to standard panels. This higher brightness would be possible using deuterium, a stable isotope of hydrogen that allows OLEDs to glow more brightly. However, the use of deuterium is not new, last year’s evo panels have already used the material. Unfortunately, LG Display has yet to release more technical information and the OLED-EX appears to be a small step up compared to the evo panels from 2021. LG says it will produce the new EX panels “from the second quarter” in South Korea and China.

It is not yet clear in which TVs we will find the new EX panels. LG Electronics, the subsidiary of LG that makes TVs with its sister company LG Display panels, said to questions from Tweakers that it would not make any statements about the matter, and Sony answered our question about using EX panels with that statement. Always use the latest generation of panels. LG Electronics has announced that it will use “evo” panels in both the C2 and G2 series this year. In addition, information now being released indicates that the G2 offers higher brightness, among other things, using a heatsink and other technical controls. The G2 may use the new EX panels, but LG Electronics doesn’t want to confirm that at this time. We understand that “OLED EX” is a marketing name given by LG Display to the new panels and that LG Electronics will not necessarily adopt that name. So it might be a good idea that LG Electronics will simply refer to the new panels in its TVs as “OLED evo”.

LG OLED panels are smaller and bigger

Another trend at LG is that it will supply OLED panels with more image sizes this year. At the bottom LG is now also adding 42 inchesHigh-end TVs with smaller screens are back. Great for those who want good picture quality, but can’t or don’t want to have a big TV in the room. There is no doubt that TVs with new 42-inch panels will also be used as (game) monitors, given the popularity of 48-inch models for this purpose.

In addition to smaller panels, the LG display also comes with larger OLED screens. In addition to the 77 and 83 picture sizes that have been available for some time, there will also be a 97-inch model this year, which in any case will be used by LG Electronics in its new high-end G2 series. It has not yet received a 97-inch model from LG, but the arrival of a larger screen could have a positive impact on the pricing of smaller OLED panels and thus the price of TVs.

LG will release OLED TVs this year with picture sizes ranging from 42″ to 97″.
