Svitolina stuns Switek in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon

He considered Elina Svitolina well and really returned.

Former world number three defeated world number one Ija Swiatek 7-5 6-7 (5) 6-2 on Tuesday at Center Court at Wimbledon to advance to her third Grand Slam semi-final.

The 2-hour, 50-minute victory was Svitolina’s seventh career victory against the world number 1 and her first since she beat then-ranked Simona Halep to win the Internazionale BNL d’Italia in Rome in 2018. This was also her Fourth win over a major champion this fortnight, as she also defeated Venus Williams, Sofia Kenin and Victoria Azarenka.

Five wins so far this week puts Svitolina into the Wimbledon semi-finals for the second time in her career, having done so for the first time four years ago in 2019.

What do you mean: Playing her second Grand Slam tournament since returning to tennis in April following the birth of her daughter in October, Svitolina is the third wild card to reach the semifinals at Wimbledon, but the first to do so in over a decade.

The Ukrainian joins China’s Zheng Jie (2008) and Germany’s Sabine Lisicki (2011) in this achievement. Although she was ranked 76th at the start of Wimbledon, thanks in part to her quarter-final run at Roland Garros last month, Svitolina’s ranking was off the main draw at the Wimbledon entry deadline in May.

Semi-final look: With Svitolina winning, an unseeded finalist is guaranteed to be eliminated from the top half of the draw. Next up she will face Czech Marketa Vondrousova, the 2019 Roland Garros finalist and No. 43 seed, who beat No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula in No. 1, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
