Sony introduces new Bravia TVs, including the top model, the A95L. This has a new QD OLED panel with higher brightness. Sony also comes with new woLED and LCD TVs with small LED backlights. All TVs run on Google TV and have a game menu for the first time.

This year’s top model is the A95L, which succeeded last year’s A95K and once again uses a QD OLED panel. While Sony doesn’t officially confirm that this model has the latest generation of Samsung Display panels on board, a spokesperson told Tweakers during a press presentation that the A95L uses “a newer generation of panels than last year’s A95K.”

Sony also claims that the A95L offers “up to twice the peak brightness” of its predecessor, indicating that the A95L uses Samsung’s latest panel. The appearance of the A95L is more traditional than its predecessor, with two compact feet that can be positioned entirely to the side or more towards the center of the screen. The A95L will be available in 55-, 65-, and 77-inch sizes.

Sony will also launch one new TV in 2023 with woled panels from LG Display. Remarkably, Sony seems to be placing it lower than before, namely in the 80 series. The new A80L will be available in 55, 65, 77, and 83-inch sizes; Smaller screen diagonals will not be available. Those who want a smaller Sony OLED TV will have to rely on the current A90K remaining in the program. Sony makes no claims about the A80L’s brightness, making it clear that these TVs use LG Display’s relatively bright OLED EX panels and not the latest microlens matrix panel technology. MLA-coated panels should achieve higher brightness, though it remains to be seen how much they can compete with the latest second-generation QD OLED panels in terms of peak brightness.

The third model in the 90 series is the X90L, which is another TV with local dimming, but in this case with regular LEDs instead of small LEDs. Compared to last year’s X90K, Sony claims an improvement in brightness and the number of dimming zones, by 60 and 50 percent, respectively. The X90L will be on sale in image sizes from at least 55 to 98 inches.

X85L is also an LCD TV with Full local dimming system, but compared with the X90L, the X80L has to deal with lower specifications in terms of contrast and brightness, while the sound system is also simpler. Finally, the X80L and X75WL are LCD TVs without local dimming.

All of the new TVs feature a new Game menu where, following the competition, Sony groups game-related settings into a single on-screen menu. Segments, pricing and availability

Only the A95L seems to be using Mediatek’s new Pentonic 1000-soc. This new chip has a slightly faster CPU and much faster GPU than the previous generation of TV chips from Mediatek, which makes the Google TV interface run smoother and apps launch faster. In addition, Pentonic has a number of new features. As a result, the A95L is the only Sony TV with it Dual picture mode, which displays two sources side by side at the same time. Dolby Vision Gaming at 120Hz is also a new feature of the Pentonic 1000, which will be available on the A95L, but not on other Sony models before 2023. However, the A95L also only has two HDMI 2.1 ports; This limitation has not been resolved by the new soc.

It’s not entirely clear why other TVs still have the old MediaTek channels. Perhaps it has something to do with the availability of the new Pentonic 1000-soc. It is not yet known when the A95L with Pentonic soc will be in stores, but we know from TP Vision that Philips TV models with Pentonic 1000 will only be available in the second half of this year. The A95L may also be a few months away. Sony does not currently provide information about pricing and availability for new TVs.
