Sony has sold more than 50 million copies of the PlayStation 5 in three years. Sales got off to a slow start due to production issues caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020. The console had only been available for over a year at the time, because only a small number of chips could be manufactured. Now these problems have been solved.
With PlayStation 4, Sony was just one week faster in reaching 50 million. These chip problems did not exist at that time. Sales have increased significantly this year, because in July Sony reached the milestone of 40 million copies sold.
PlayStation 5 production will be increased further in the near future. CEO Jim Ryan says Sony can meet demand for the first time around the holidays. “Anyone who wants to buy one can have one,” he promises.
The PlayStation 2 remains Sony’s best-selling gaming console to date. More than 155 million of them have been sold. PlayStation 4 has sold a total of 117 million units.
Xbox series from Microsoft according to Financial Times Roughly one Xbox is sold for every three PlayStation 5 units.
