Razer unveils Android mobile gaming devices Edge and Edge 5G – Games – News

I think it really depends on how you play your games. They advertise 4K at 144fps, and I think that cuts it short. In 4K, you’re up to about 16GB per hour and still that’s at 60fps. Now it will only be on an external screen where you still have WiFi (hopefully a decent speed) but until then the screen is 2400 x 1080.

At 2400 x 1080 I’m expecting only 3.75GB per hour of data usage, so it wouldn’t be that bad. Supplements are fine in less than an hour stream, which is a shame, so playing all day isn’t in it. Only when you connect the thing to an external screen while advertising, it can get much louder.

On the other hand, this is a launch in collaboration with Verizon. Verizon’s “unlimited” plan has the following footnote:

After you exceed 50GB/month of 5G Ultra Broadband, 5G Nationwide, or 4G LTE data, you can still use the hotspot at lower speeds of 3Mbps when using 5G ultra broadband and 600kbps when connected to 5G Nationwide/4G LTE for the rest of the month. 5G network access requires a 5G enabled device.

3Mbps isn’t going to make your experience all that great and that’s on UWB, which requires almost a direct line of sight; At 600 kbps you won’t play at all. So you actually have about 13 hours of mobile gaming per month at 2,400 x 1080. For a single US subscription, you pay $90 per month before taxes etc, so you’re actually paying a whole new Razer Edge every four months. The costs will be somewhat lower if you already save another subscription for your mobile phone, but data in the US is still quite expensive compared to the Netherlands.

It would be possible in Holland, but in the US where this thing is already sold, I don’t see the value in it.
