Argentina, the reigning World Cup and Copa America champions, face Colombia, who have not lost in 28 matches since 2022, on Sunday in the 2024 Copa America final at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
The game kicked off at around 9:15 p.m. ET after fans rushed the gates and delayed the scheduled 8 p.m. start.
Colombia’s unbeaten run continued throughout their run to the final as Los Cafeteros won 2-1-0 in the group stage before beating Brazil on penalties, crushing Panama 5-0 and eliminating Uruguay with a 1-0 win in the semifinals. The last team to beat Colombia? Well, that was Argentina, whose 1-0 win over Colombia in the South American qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup was part of the reason they didn’t make it to Qatar that year.
Meanwhile, Argentina’s victory helped them reach the World Cup, which they eventually won on penalties against France. But in the 2021 Copa America, after 28 years of barrenness, Lionel Messi led Argentina to the title and continue their march towards world domination.
Now the two teams meet in the Copa America final for the first time in the tournament’s 108-year history. If Argentina wins, it will secure a record 16th title, while Colombia is seeking only its second.
