Hundreds of thousands of Corona vaccines from the manufacturer Novavax threaten to remain on the shelf because there is hardly any enthusiasm, the daily writes devotion† 840,000 doses have been purchased and delivered, but less than 1,000 have been captured to date.
The Ministry of Health does not want to say how much was paid for the vaccines, but according to Trouw, the total delivery is likely to be around 15 million euros. The ministry told the newspaper that 840,000 doses had been purchased to ensure the availability of sufficient doses for 2022 and 2023. But according to Trouw newspaper, the shelf life of the doses already ends on August 31 this year.
Novavax was purchased to provide an alternative for people who do not want to be vaccinated with a so-called mRNA vaccine, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. Where the mRNA vaccine contains synthetic genetic material that ensures that human cells produce the spike protein of the coronavirus themselves, the Novavax vaccine directly injects this spike protein.
Since March 11, people can schedule a Novavax vaccination. To date, 655 people have been vaccinated and there are still 329 appointments.
In order not to leave behind thousands of doses, the Ministry decided to make 420,000 doses of Novavax available for donation to other countries. It is doubtful whether this will work, as the supply of vaccines has increased in other countries.
