Stefanos Tsitsipas’ victory over Matteo Perettini did not stop Italy’s tennis team from reaching the final of the United Cup mixed country tournament in Sydney. Greek Tsitsipas gave her country the first point (2-1) after two losses, but then Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti claimed the third and decisive point against Valentini Grammaticopoulou 6-2 6-3. Italy will face USA in the final.
The tennis players are gearing up for the Australian Open after winning in three sets (4-6 7-6 (2) 6-4) in Sydney. It was a necessary win after the Italian’s victories over Martina Trevisan and Lorenzo Musetti on Friday. This put pressure on Gramatikopoulou, however, who knew after one set that he was working on a hopeless job.
Taylor Fritz earlier gave the Americans the deciding point against Poland, defeating Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets 7-6 (5) 7-6 (5). On Friday, Team USA had already taken a 2-0 lead thanks to wins by Jessica Pegula and Frances Tiafoe. Americans also won the remaining matches: Madison Keys in singles, Fritz and Pegula in mixed doubles.
