The Oilers played 37 years in Houston, more years than the Giants played in Tennessee. Owner and founder Bud Adams moved the franchise to Tennessee in 1997, taking the team’s history with him.
Adams remains Houston’s arch enemy more than 10 years after his death.
So, Houstonians didn’t take kindly to the Giants pulling off an Oilers rebound against the Texans on Sunday. The Giants added Oilers signs around the stadium and painted the end zones with the word “Oilers.” Even the fans wear Oilers gear.
Some former players loved him. Current players don’t do that.
Thus, the Texans’ 19-16 win over the fake Oilers in the final overtime game made it even more enjoyable.
“Man, I could have sworn that was ours,” Texans fullback Jonathan Greenard, who had 2.5 sacks, said, via KPRC’s Aaron Wilson. “But at the end of the day, they can wear it. They took the ‘L’ into them. So, we can continue to see who will wear those clothes in the end. If they pull them back, I don’t know if it’s bad luck or what.
“But they’ll have to see us in a couple of weeks. So, we’ll see if they’ve got the white shirts, or a copy of them, and whether they pull them off. I’m excited. It’s been a good look for them. But at the end of the day, they still have to come and see us.” “You still have to play ball. I don’t care what outfit you wear.”
The Giants also attacked the Texans with coach Mike Vrabel arriving on the field wearing a cowboy hat in honor of former Houston Oilers coach Bum Phillips. At halftime, the Giants inducted former Houston Oilers running back Billy Wyatt Shoes Johnson into their Ring of Honor with Hall of Famer Earl Campbell making an appearance.
But Houstonians had the last laugh on Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk, a Houston resident, and her team.
Texas social media even posted “Happy Oil Game!” With oil poured on the Giants logo.
Tennessee played two seasons with the Oilers before changing its name to the Giants before the 1997 season. The Texans entered the league as an expansion team in 2002.
Retired Texans defensive end JJ Watt suggested that with their win Sunday, the Texans earned the uniform rights. Here’s a better idea: The winner of each Texans-Titans game can wear an Oilers uniform the next time the two teams meet. Who (other than Strunk) would say no?
