excise is a passion project from Microsoft studio Obsidian, which combines the elements of role-playing games and point-and-click adventures into something special. It’s the 16th century, and the Renaissance is beginning to creep into the remote Bavarian mountain village of Tassing. The local abbey tries to prevent the arrival of Protestantism and the printing press, but when a revolutionary-minded baron is murdered in the abbey, the village is put on edge.
You play Andreas Mahler, an itinerant artist working in a monastery. Because one of his friends is being blamed, he decides to act as a detective. In every part of the day you can do a search with the name Andreas, but the number of days is limited. So you need to think carefully about what you want to find and who you want. There are really no good answers.
The graphic style is reminiscent of the way old books were illustrated and gives this game a lot of atmosphere. Even the lines in each character’s speech bubbles give you an idea of who you’re talking to, though those lines can also be turned off for those who don’t mind.
excise It is a special game based on its story, which eventually extends over several decades, both in terms of atmosphere and location. The pace is slow so it can get boring. But for those who can surrender to the slow, rustic world of Tassing, there’s a lot to find fascinating

Score: 4 out of 5 stars
Ogre Tactics: Reborn It is a remaster of a game that appeared on Super Nintendo in the 90’s and shook up the role-playing genre at the time. You play as a young denim, who along with his rebel group gets embroiled in a growing war in the fractured kingdom of Valyria.
It’s a story that sometimes feels like it Game of thrones, with many different characters who all have their own interests. That was unique to a 90’s game and ensures that this prettier remake has aged well.
The game revolves around many battles. You fight entire battles on a grid, taking turns telling all your soldiers where to go and who to attack. It feels like a different kind of chess, with all sorts of side rules making it more complicated. For example, one soldier can only attack at close range and the other cannot climb high ledges.
Ogre Tactics defined what the “strategic role-playing game” genre would look like in the years to come, but this original game is still one of the best games of its kind after all these years. An excellent game for those who want to spend dozens of hours pondering the difficult dilemmas of war.
