Fantasy RPG Avowed runs at 30 FPS on Xbox Series X and S – Gaming – News

Obsidian’s fantasy RPG runs at around 30 frames per second on Xbox Series X and S consoles, says art director Matt Hanson. He notes that 60 frames per second isn’t necessarily necessary for a first-person single-player game.

Hanson late In the Iron Lords Podcast, you learn that Obsidian for the console version of Avowed a goal “At least” 30 frames per second. According to the art director, this made it possible to create better effects and lighting. He also mentions that 60 frames per second for a single-player game is “not necessarily necessary.” So there are no different modes that allow players to choose between higher resolutions or higher frame rates.

Hanson notes that the choice to focus on 30fps was made “relatively early” in development and that the game “runs quite smoothly because of how visually rich it is.” Bethesda previously gave a similar reason for Starfield’s 30fps target. A 60fps mode for that game was later added for the Xbox Series X.

Avowed is a fantasy RPG developed by developer Obsidian. The game takes place in Eora, much like the games in the Pillars of Eternity series from the same manufacturer. Avowed features an open world that is said to be much larger than Skyrim and contains a number of major cities. The game will be released on February 18, 2025 for Xbox consoles and PC.
