In Germany, the controversial magazine Compact may now be published. Last month, the government imposed a ban on the magazine, which it described as a mouthpiece for the far right. But the publication ban was temporarily suspended.

Compact has appealed the government’s decision to ban the magazine. The court in Leipzig is examining the complaint and has decided that there are no sufficient grounds for a ban at the moment. A final ruling may not be available for several months.

“aggressive attitude”

The court sees “a hardline and aggressive attitude towards fundamental constitutional principles.” There are also “indications” that the agreement’s publications “violate human dignity,” but on the other hand, according to the court, most of the publications remain within the limits of freedom of expression.

Until a full investigation is conducted into the matter, the court believes the publication ban is disproportionate. The statement indicated that the authorities may take “more moderate” measures against the media company, such as imposing other restrictions or banning gatherings.

“We can go on”

According to Interior Minister Weiser, the magazine incites hatred against Jews, people with an immigrant background and against parliamentary democracy. The German intelligence service has classified the magazine as anti-democratic. According to the service, conspiracy theories are also widespread in the magazine.

The agreement is based on freedom of the press. Founder Jürgen Elsaesser describes the interim ruling as a victory. The entire legal process, he says, “will take at least two years.” “Until then, let’s keep going!” The magazine has been around since 2021 and has a monthly circulation of 40,000 copies.
