Construction company Van Wijnen has halted construction of the extension of the Vigilante beach hotel on Makkum Street. Client Baarth’s banking assets were seized. He failed to meet his financial obligations for the multi-million dollar project.

Builder Van Wijnen in Gorredijk has halted construction of luxury apartments and hotel rooms at the Vigilante beach hotel. Client Baarth can no longer pay bills. Van Wijnen recently seized the banking assets of the owner of the Vigilante beach hotel in Makkum.

Unpaid bills

Van Wijnen had already applied the right of retention a month ago. The goods, in this case the floors and walls of the first floor, are held until the outstanding bills are paid. Because this did not happen, the multi-million dollar project has now been on hold since January 22. “You hope that the client can meet his financial obligations,” answers Willem Huisman, deputy director of Van Wijnen. “No one expected this and it is very disturbing. We hope that this seizure will be enough to resume the case.”

The construction company is currently no longer in discussions with the beach hotel’s owner, Theo op de Hoek, Huisman said. Van Wijnen’s legal advisers are considering further steps.

Apartments are already sold out

Beach Hotel Vigilante will be expanded with a new hotel wing comprising 25 luxury suites and 32 luxury leisure apartments. The new hotel rooms and apartments are located on the beach and Makkum Street. On Van Wijnen’s website, commercial director Jeroen van Balen says it is “a great addition to the leisure opportunities and experience in Friesland”. Penta Architects of Harlingen designed the building. A number of apartments have already been sold.
