A year ago, Bryce Eldridge sat at his home in Vienna, Virginia, and watched two-way standout Reggie Crawford get selected by the Giants with the 30th overall pick of the 2022 draft.
The moment ultimately served as a window into Eldridge’s future, as the right-handed pitcher/first baseman from James Madison High School (Virginia) would now get a chance to join Crawford as a two-way player in the Giants’ organization.
San Francisco selected the 18-year-old Eldridge with the 16th overall pick of the 2023 MLB draft on Sunday, marking the second straight year the club has used its first-round pick for a two-way player. Eldridge broke down in tears when he heard his name called to him by the Giants, absorbed in the great achievement while surrounded by nearly 50 friends and family members.
“It was a surreal moment for all of us,” Eldridge said Monday during a Zoom call with reporters. “My buddies were crying, I was crying, and my whole family was crying. I couldn’t even put into words what the feelings were. But it was a day neither of us would ever forget. It still feels unreal to me.”
Eldridge said one of the first people to reach out to congratulate him was Crawford, who currently pitches every five days and hits once a week at Single-A San Jose. The Giants have been treading carefully with Crawford, who is coming out of Tommy John surgery, but they believe the 6-foot-7, 223-pound Eldridge has the physical tools and athleticism to follow a similar path and may one day develop into a true two-way star like Angels sensation Shuhei Ohtani .
“He called me last night, and that was great,” Eldridge said of Crawford. It was one of the first messages I saw. I got his number. I’m looking forward to staying in touch with him, working with him, and kind of picking his brain a little bit on the whole two-way thing. I remember watching my home being recruited last year. Watching him do that last year was cool because it was something I was looking forward to doing, recruiting as a two-way player. I’ve known the name for a while, and now I’m buddies with him, and I’m on the team with him. I’m excited about it.”
The Giants began tracking Eldridge two years ago, when they made regular visits to James Madison High School to scout teammate, James Triantos, for the Cubs’ second round pick in 2021. They began having talks in November or December, with the Giants sending scouts to all His high school games rounded out this year, when he posted a 1.06 ERA with 66 strikeouts over 39 2/3 innings pitched on the mound and batted . 422 with eight home runs and a 1.716 OPS at the plate.
Eldridge, the 2022-23 Virginia Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year, hits 95-96 mph with a fastball and features a promising catch and changeup, but he estimated that half the teams he spoke with wanted him to develop strictly as a hitter, as he’s shown great power with a short swing Left-handed try to model him after Phillies star Bryce Harper. He is thankful that the Giants are willing to give him a chance to do both and eager to begin the next chapter of his baseball journey. While being recruited by the University of Alabama, Eldridge said he planned to drop the commitment and turn pro.
“The Giants are a very interesting organization to be recruiting,” said Eldridge. “I was always interested. There was always an interest with them. I am very lucky to be a part of this organization.”
Elridge’s two-way exploits have led some throughout the baseball community to dub him “American Ohtani,” but he hopes he can make a name for himself with the Giants in the future.
“I would never complain about being compared to the best player in baseball right now,” said Eldridge. “Obviously, we’re a long way from there. There’s still a lot of work to be done, but he was someone I’ve looked up to since he came to America, so I don’t mind that. But I want to be Bryce Eldridge, not the American Shoah. I want Being able to make a big impact on the game in my own way.”
