AMD introduces 7020U series laptop APUs with Zen 2 and RDNA2 igpu cores – Computer – News

AMD introduces the 7020U series of laptop APUs. These laptop processors are produced according to the TSMC 6nm process and have Zen 2 cores and an integrated RDNA2 GPU. AMD comes with Ryzen and Athlon variants of these CPUs.

AMD comes with three different CPUs in the 7020U series, also called Mendocino. The Ryzen 5 7520U will be the top model and will feature four ‘Zen 2 Enhanced’ cores with a maximum 4.3GHz. The Ryzen 3 7320U has similar specs, but gets slower clock speeds. The Athlon Gold 7220U gets two CPU cores. All processors have a TDP of 8 to 15 W and are produced on a TSMC 6nm node, while previous Zen 2 CPUs were produced at 7nm. AMD claims that the processor should be able to provide a “typical battery life” of 12 hours in a laptop with a battery capacity of 40 to 45 Wh. In a briefing with reporters, AMD stated that this is a “conservative estimate.”

All processors in this series also have an integrated Radeon 610M GPU. It is based on the RDNA2 architecture also used in the AMD Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards. AMD does not share the GPU specifications, but according to previous rumors, the Radeon 610M will get two compute units. According to AMD, the GPU is suitable for playing light games, such as esports games like League of Legends and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive at a resolution of 720p 60. The CPUs also provide support for Lpddr5 memory and receive the Microsoft Pluton security chip.

Many manufacturers will eventually come up with laptops based on this processor series. Lenovo introduces the IdeaPad 1 laptop with the Ryzen 7020 chip, HP introduces a 17-inch laptop and Acer introduces the Aspire 3 laptop with such a processor. Other companies, such as ASUS, are also releasing the 7020U in. According to AMD, the first laptops with such a processor will ship in the last quarter of this year, with the Ryzen 3 7320U coming first, with Ryzen 5 and Athlon Gold models “soon”.

These are the first processors that are used AMD’s New Laptop CPU Labeling System. The first number indicates the year the CPU was released. The third number in the product name indicates which version of the Zen architecture the CPU is using, in this case Zen 2. The designation for AMD desktop processors remains unchanged.
