No reason was given for the decision. Unless the ban is challenged, a movie, game, audio medium or book will remain on the banned title index for 25 years. GoldenEye 007 will be automatically removed from the list next year.

The Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Medien (BPJM) ruled at the time that the game was unsuitable for minors because James Bond’s enemies faced such a violent end. 007 victims showed obvious bleeding and their suffering was often in the picture for a long time.

reissuing

The game was released in 1998 for the Nintendo 64, a gaming console by the Japanese company Nintendo. More than 32 million of them were sold between 1996 and 2002, but most of them now end up in a landfill or collecting dust in the attic. So there is no longer a market for the original game.

In recent years, attempts have been made to redesign GoldenEye 007 so that it could run on modern consoles, but re-releases have always been contested over copyright. Producers should agree not only with the producers of James Bond films, but also with actors such as Pierce Brosnan, Sean Penn, Famke Janssen and Joe Don Baker who played roles in golden eye.

It is suspected that Nintendo will now release the game to the online service for the game console, the Switch, due to its likable status. The Japanese gaming company recently announced an expansion that would allow subscribers, for a fee, to play a range of older titles once they were released for the Nintendo 64 and Sega Saga, a competitive console at the time, through proprietary software.

The ban makes a release on the Switch impossible, because Nintendo’s European headquarters are located in Germany, and therefore must comply with German law. Maybe that’s why someone asked for an early review.

GoldenEye 007 was initially not a huge commercial success, but was later considered one of the greatest in gaming history because it offered a more realistic interpretation of the term “shooting game”. At the time, all these types of computer games were derived from Doom, where the player would constantly run their finger on the trigger to shoot as many aliens as possible. In GoldenEye 007, among other things, a sniper rifle was used for the first time.

Watchlist

Some of the best-known and best-selling games around the world, including classics like Half-Life and Wolfenstein, have appeared on the list of banned titles in Germany over the years. Cleaning up a game is sometimes a godsend. For example, there’s Carmageddon from 1997, where the player sows death and destruction in traffic. However, in the German version, the other road users are zombies who spread green blood when run over. For example, there are German censored versions of many games.
