Passers-by filmed the unfortunate incident with the horse and posted it on social media. The footage shows a man trying to get the horse back. A Spanish-speaking woman approaches the tourists to ask them to come down. People also say that an animal needs water.

40 degrees

Last Saturday the temperature was at least 40 degrees in Mallorca, presumably the horse collapsed due to the intense heat. “But drought or ageing can play a role, too,” says Guillermo Amengual, owner of a local animal rights party. He says he will file a formal complaint with the local authorities.

The animal finally got up again. It is not clear if the horse carried passengers that day.

It would also be the third time something like this had happened in Mallorca in the past two months, Amingual says. For example, a horse fell to the ground a few months ago, and in June the police stopped a cart pulled by an old animal that was limping.

Spinal collapse

The debate over donkey and horse care in the tourism industry has been going on for some time. For example, people weighing more than 80 kilograms are no longer allowed to use donkey taxis in Spain. Animal protection advocates complain that the animals often suffer cuts in the seats on their backs due to the chagrin of overweight passengers. Also, many donkeys will have a collapsed spine.

Authorities in Mallorca are looking for an “electric alternative” to the horse cart.
