He was on the roof for about six minutes, had been flying a drone before the meeting, and as a teenager had posted violent online posts targeting Jews and immigrants. More and more information is emerging about the man who shot former President Trump last July, but the FBI still doesn’t know his motives.

On July 13, 20-year-old Thomas Crooks fired eight bullets from a rooftop at presidential candidate Trump, who was giving a speech at a campaign rally. Trump was hit in the ear. A man in the audience was killed. The gunman was shot dead immediately after the assassination attempt.

The FBI today provided an update on its ongoing investigation into the shooter, which has already included more than a thousand conversations. The new information was primarily about Crooks’ online behavior. But even with that information, the FBI can’t yet say what motivated him.

For example, in the month before the attack, Crooks conducted more than 60 searches containing the names “Trump” or “Biden.” He sought meetings with both Republicans and Democrats. The FBI also says he was a supporter of different ideologies, so he cannot be classified as “left” or “right.”

The shooter had apparently been looking for information about the explosives several times since 2019. By September 2023, he had already consulted the Trump campaign’s agenda. The FBI believes Crooks was actively researching a major event and became intrigued by a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, which happened to be close to where he lived.

There is no indication that anyone else was involved in the assassination attempt.

The FBI says it now has a clear picture of the shooter’s “thinking,” because he appears to have conducted such targeted and detailed preliminary research to attack a major event. But his motivations, and what ultimately led him to attack Trump, remain unclear.

The investigation is expected to be completed within three weeks.
