In recent months, Princess Laurentian has not only publicly criticised the way the Finance Ministry has treated affected parents. Reports have also emerged about the princess’s behaviour, with the term “abusive behaviour” being used.

Constantine and Laurentian are members of the royal house, which means they cannot say everything publicly. They have to submit their statements and activities in advance to the responsible minister.

Omtzigt believes that there is now too much uncertainty about ministerial responsibility and questions whether the prime minister or minister should always be responsible for statements made by members of the royal household. Freedom Party leader Wilders agrees with Omtzigt’s call.

Prince Constantijn stresses in his response that he does not do any ceremonial activities and, like his wife, must provide his own income. Prime Minister Schönberg is not yet willing to comment on the furore surrounding Princess Laurentien and is first awaiting what he calls a “retrospective” investigation. Ultimately, it will be up to him and the Minister of State in charge of allowances, Aschahbar, to decide whether the princess should take a more background position.
